Security tips

With rapid economic development in the region, even Lao PDR is not exempt from a rise in petty theft and robberies.  Often it seems
that thieves are a step ahead of the law and of protection technology.  Expatriates and Lao citizens are equal targets of crime, but expatriates often lack a local network and permanent presence within their homes.  In this and future articles we will explore what the average household in Vientiane can do to improve their security.

Naturally, we at Kerberos Security are continuously improving our products to  greatly decrease your changes of a brush with crime, but no system can offer complete protection 100% of the time.  However, there are steps you can take to improve the security of your home and personal effects.

Vientiane Police Office is in discussions with Vientiane Police Headquarters and the Ministry of Public Security to replace or repair more than 50 broken closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the city.

The office recently reported a number of cameras were broken in areas across Vientiane; cameras normally used to help in investigations on crime and road accidents.

Earlier this month the office spoke to police headquarters and the ministry to establish why the cameras were breaking and how to solve the problem.

Vientiane Police Office Deputy Chief, Lieutenant Colonel Phommachan Suanbounma, said 51 cameras were down due to technical problems, high temperatures in control rooms and cables damaged in fires. “We have had to work harder to follow targets of crime as well as road accidents and traffic jams in Vientiane after the cameras broke,” he said.

seasonal thefts on the rise

Vientiane Police Office has warned government departments and private businesses to be more wary of office security during the rainy season after a recent spate of thefts.

Vientiane Police Chief, Lieutenant Colonel Salong Sengathith, said the wet weather sometimes meant security guards spent less time inspecting premises at night, which has led to the theft of valuables from offices becoming a major problem.

“Thieves will take the opportunity when security don’t do their job, and will jump into an office and steal valuables. The problem has been occurring in Vientiane for a few weeks now,” he said.

A little care goes very far

repair & maintenance small

maintenance?

Dear Reader! In case you encounter similar conditions at any of your security systems like shown to the left, it is time to start to worry: your system will soon give up the daily fight against dust, water and pesticides, and will soon simply stop performing the duties you purchased them for – from one day to the other.

With a little care lifetime of even the most economic systems can be extended, their performance increased. Usually the yearly maintenance cost of any security system, including their installations, wirings and other related parts and fixings is around or even below 10% of their purchase value. Definitely much more affordable than investment into a new system every year! And what is to be done in case the phase on the picture is already achieved  – but even better and strongly recommended before?

sponsored by J&C Expat Services

The number of crimes in Vientiane continues to rise despite police efforts to crack down on the criminals, according to a weekly report from Vientiane Police Headquarters on Wednesday.

From July 17-23, a total of 54 criminal cases were recorded in the capital, six more cases compared to the previous week, with robbery among the major crimes this week.

Some of the more brazen crimes recorded by police included: The robbery of Ms Mee Malayvieng, aged 24, a trader from Dongpalaep village in the capital’s Chanthabouly district. On July 17, she rode with her niece on a motorbike to visit her relatives in Donkoi village, Xaysettha district.

At around 2pm she went out from her relative’s house and shortly afterwards, two criminals followed her, using a motorbike without a number plate. The criminals rode their motorbike up beside her and used a sharp implement to threaten her before taking her motorbike, jewelry and other properties to escape the scene.
