How NOT TO install security

How NOT TO...

Is this the way?

After facing countless bad events, shocking stories and sad customers coming from competitor companies, we decided to launch a new topic with photos with pure educational intention because of system conditions and business behavior of some private companies we noticed to spread in Laos. The common aspect of theses stories – even in the best case – is the poor quality that can be tracked back to the performance of the supplier company itself . So called “security companies” – some of them well known in Laos –  still seem not to be aware what are the basics for security and electric installations, putting the clients in an awkward situation and disposing them to even more risk they faced before the possession of some systems – more sadly these uncareful installers or traders are hereby pulling the reputation of the whole local security service industry very deep, including those few who try to perform well. We should understand in case we security firms and teams will not be unitedly able to perform quality works for the customers and to respect at least the basic operation conditions for each and every systems, we will loose our customers and we let foreign companies to come over the borders and expand their competition strengthened services in this country.

In this session I will show some of the definitely low cost or inappropriate installations we faced – kindly note the security purchased or installed for cheap will provide also a protection level accordingly: weak or none. Even in case there is an economic or low budget system with a little care at installation and by being aware of the content of related installation manuals and conditions at least the system can work and serve appropriately for its lifecycle and we can make our customers happy and protected in exchange for their money collected.

After the sad warming up let us see some sites and installations without mentioning the “perpetrator” company or the client – we do hope the installers will recognize themselves and their way of work and will perform a full installation sooner or later for the sake of protection of their own proper paying customers.

1. Radio REED relay “installation” in Vientiane

How NOT TO install a REED

Well on the picture right here we can immediately see 3 important things to notice:

– Systems with such non hidden and non protected comm antenna solutions are the cheapest available on market, to be considered outdated years ago – except of some leading manufacturers special duty units – nowadays criminals do disarm or disable such radio installments in no time with a simple handheld unit that can be purchased on Alibaba (where this specific system itself was purchased most likely too and I bet it was under hundred bucks to buy).

– the REED relay on picture is not properly installed – this is the main reason of the defected position shown. The locations of the contacts have been mixed up. Main comm unit to the frame, contact to the door next time guys!

– the REED positioning on such doors must respect and be parallel to the opening / closing vectors in every case. The whole pair should have been installed by a rotation of 90 degrees, which positioning also eliminates occurrence of such defect when parts are pushing each other away of position. I understand the local doors are not the properly engineered ones the REEDs were designed to install onto, however it is feasible as described or one should pick another detector type from the low budget kit instead.

Risks of such systems:

  • Insurance inspection will not consider this kind of installation as security system, therefore benefits are lost, most likely coverage bonus – or the whole coverage – too because of violation of insurance conditions.
  • In other countries you loose your business and import licenses in case you leave such system behind.
  • System is easy to bypass, disable or hack into. Radio signals of these low budget systems are easily tracked and cloned.

2. Installation of CCTV camera in Vientiane

How NOT TO install a CCTV camera

What we see here on one sole picture is the violation of installation requirements, security installation standards, basic operation conditions, and system requirements the very same time on one sole camera location.

– What system this camera did belong to originally? Analog or IP? Whatever it is, we can see an electrical engineering disaster with the wirings – I do hope nobody will be near during a thunderstorm or a simple surge from local electric network. Due someone was smart enough to force open the back cover in order to perform this wiring “upgrade” and mixed up the required power and signal cabling to push this poor camera in a non compatible system, hereby all kind of protection is eliminated smartly, also  the installation is subject of surge and fire risk.

– Signal wiring. Dear “colleagues” please understand: a diesel engine will not run very well with unleaded 95 octane fuel just as the analog signals are not really like to be translated to digital as well. It is 2 different technology. It is possible and feasible to convert and revert signals but in case performed properly it will definitely not look like that on the picture. You are selling HD CCTV cameras widely all over Laos and you provide an inadequate wiring to them so the signal when reached the recording unit will perform 1 megapixel or less… if you have a chance.

– Still about  the signal wiring. The worse case is when you try to replace appropriate but expensive shielded KOAX with UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) inappropriately. This is simply a fraud committed against your buyer. Less worse when you install KOAX but unshielded plain cables, so each time the aircondition goes on or someone turns on the light or a fan, the picture quality and transmission is.. hmm how to say… affected. In this second case well you was just non careful in the best case.

– Electrical wiring. Just shortly: Security Systems are to be installed to eliminate risks, not to give birth to new ones. Surge protection, grounding and proper electrical connection of your equipments is essential, so they can perform for long years post-warranty as well, besides the office you installed will not burn down due to a surge traveling trough your wirings to the end unit where it will perform its duty in the form of a short circuit and lightning.

In any case such installments should be rewarded by immediate withdrawal of business license and should have legal consequences for fraud and for unhealthy and risky operation.

Risks of such systems:

  • Cameras cannot perform as per their output maximum
  • Fire risk, surge risk
  • Loss of warranty
  • Violation of insurance and safety conditions

3. Recording station installation in Vientiane

How NOT TO install DVR and controls

In brief the way a security company installs a system will determine how it is going to be used later on. In case it is disposed like this – besides the fact that it is not properly placed, connected or supplied with power – it will be used as a shelf like that one on the picture.

– The DVRs NVRs also the hybrid stations are to be considered as so called server room equipments. Not only because the temperature range they require for optimal operation (refer to any user manual) but also because of the dust free environment expected by IT technology operation – mainly if it is a security installation. This poor DVR next to the glass facade must survive an extreme temperature deviance mainly when it is disposed to the sun coming trough the front window and also have to fight against all the dust and garbage falling trough the ventilation holes or other non isolated parts of the DVR case.

– In case the head governing units (i.e servers, storages, recorders etc) are not well placed and protected, someone can disable them easily trough the window by a remote. So what is the use of such systems to be present?

– In case of a more brutal attempt the DVR and the records within can be reached and taken trough the window – there will be no records remaining to see and track down the perpetrator, because it will be simply taken away together with the other stolen things.

– The remotes should be put away and locked or the opportunity to disable the system is offered together with the option to commit anything in this shop with no risk.

– The security DVR is not a shelf, nor flower pot or paper weight. In case you using it for such purposes (or you install it such way) you not seriously expect the system to prevent you or your customer from anything right?

– As wirings were already discussed a little before I just ask: what is that easily accessible jungle of cables in the open conduit behind? Besides other risks it is the greatest place for a gecko to climb deep in the wiring network and commit suicide by stepping on any of the electrical connections within, burning the most valuable system parts down in a second.

Risks of such systems:

  • Easy access to disable of all the systems (alarm, CCTV on the picture)
  • Temperature impact
  • Fire and safety risk
  • Loss of warranty
  • Short lifetime due to temperature and dusty, unclean operation environment
  • Most likely strongly interfered camera and alarm radio signals, false alarms, useless footage

4. Barbed wire bracket and installation in Vientiane

How NOT TO install barbed wire

Everything what can be done wrong on one picture. Wring material, wrong bending direction, wrong bracketing. You just provided a tool to get over your fence easier.

– The bending (top bending) should look outwards if you use this method. In this case it is facing inwards. It seems you wish to keep inhabitants inside but for information the picture was not taken in a jail but on perimeter of a private property.

– The bracket should be solid and unaffected constantly on all its height and should be fixed properly to the top of the fence if this is the way of installation. The case on the picture results an installation that can be deformed and pulled outwards by a 12 years old due to the cut driveways for the barbed wire, than it can serve as a ladder to help get inside.

– There is a so called driving wire that serves to strain the whole wired structure and support the tension – naturally it requires strong reinforced corner brackets and solid support brackets. It is sometimes included within the barbed wire, sometimes supplied separately. Here there is none, therefore the function of the installation is more similar to what one expects of a fishing net than of a physical security structure.

Risks of such installations:

  • Provides a tool for access instead of protection
  • Risks of accidents in case a bracket bends or breaks due to aging or weight and/ or releases the barbed wire. We had situations when we were called to free the gardener out of the barbed wire fence part that fell on him because he had cut a branch that unexpectedly supported the fence instead of the long ago rusted bracket.
